Today’s Word: CONTAGIOUS
Today’s Time of Stillness: 12 minutes
You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. – Psalm 16:11
Today is the LAST DAY for Voting!
It’s easy to confuse joy and happiness. There are a lot of things that make me happy. A freshly sharpened pencil. Jeans that fit just right. Game night dinner with friends. A clean house (despite what you may have read in Holiday Cleaning).
Joy is different. Joy, true joy, happens when you know that God is in the middle of what’s going on. That the world, in that moment, is as it should be.
At Bitty & Beau’s Coffee, the joy comes everyday, but especially at 9:30 am. That’s when the dancing begins!
In this special coffee shop staffed by 40 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, 9:30 is a time when we are invited to experience the joy that seems to come so naturally to Trevor and to Matt and to Elizabeth.
A joy without masks, or pretense, or worry.
A joy that teaches us what it means to be free to be truly ourselves; to embrace who we are and to love others for who they are.
A joy that celebrates the simple fact that it is 9:30 and we are here together… so let’s dance!
70% of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are unemployed. For that reason alone you should vote for Bitty & Beau’s as CNN Heroes of the Year, for making the satisfaction and dignity of work available to men and women who might otherwise not be given that opportunity.
But my prayer is that your take away from their story will be even greater than that this Advent. I pray that their joy will be contagious. That as you practice stillness this Advent, their faces will come to your mind and bring a huge smile, and that their joy will awaken the longing in your own spirit to be truly free.
Free in Christ to be the beautiful person God created you to be.
Free in spirit to love the differences in yourself and others.
And most especially, free to dance. It’s 9:30 somewhere!
